If you’re still sending cold DMs to land clients, I need you to hear something: there is a better way. And it doesn’t involve messaging 50 strangers a day hoping someone responds.
I spent my first year as an agency owner in the cold DM trenches. I would scroll Instagram looking for businesses with bad social media, craft what I thought was a thoughtful message, and hit send. Over and over and over.
My response rate? Maybe 2%. My close rate from those responses? Even worse.

And the clients I DID land through cold outreach? They were the hardest clients I’ve ever had. Because when you chase someone, they never fully respect what you bring to the table.
Cold DMs aren’t just ineffective. They position you as desperate.
Think about it from the business owner’s perspective. They get 10 messages a week from social media managers offering their services. Every message sounds the same. “Hey! I love your brand. I noticed you could use some help with your social media. I’d love to chat about how I can help you grow!”
Delete. Delete. Delete.
Even if your message is genuinely good, you’re swimming in a sea of identical pitches. And the perception is always: if you have to chase me, you must not be very busy.
Genuine lead generation looks completely different. It’s about creating systems that attract your ideal clients TO you. So when they reach out, they’re already sold on you before the first conversation.
Here’s what replaced cold DMs in my business and in the businesses of hundreds of agency owners I’ve coached:
Not a generic “10 social media tips” PDF. Something specific enough that your ideal client sees the title and thinks “I need that right now.”
Examples that convert:
The key is specificity. The more it speaks to a specific person with a specific problem, the more it converts.
This doesn’t need to be complicated. You need:
A landing page where they enter their email to get the freebie. An email welcome sequence (3-5 emails over 10 days) that delivers value and positions you as the expert. A call to action to book a discovery call.
That’s it. No fancy tech stack. No 47-step automation. A landing page, an email platform, and a booking link.
This is where most people drop off because they want instant results. But the social media managers who build sustainable agencies are the ones who show up consistently with content that:
Educates. Teach your ideal client something they didn’t know. “Here’s why your engagement dropped this month and what to do about it.”
Positions. Share your process, your opinions, your approach. “I don’t believe in posting 3x a day. Here’s what I do instead.”
Converts. Directly tell people what you offer and who it’s for. “I help restaurant owners double their Instagram engagement in 90 days. Link in bio to learn how.”
The ratio that works: 60% educational, 25% positioning, 15% conversion.
Your email list is the most valuable asset in your business. Social media algorithms change. Platforms shut down. But your email list is yours.
Send one email a week. Share a tip, a story, or a lesson. Make it feel like a note from a friend, not a corporate newsletter.
The people who stay on your list for 2-3 months before booking a call? They’re your best clients. Because they’ve been consuming your content, absorbing your approach, and by the time they reach out, they already trust you.
Referrals are the highest-converting lead source in existence. But most agency owners just hope referrals happen naturally.
Build a system:
When your client experience is exceptional, referrals become automatic. But you still need to ask.
With cold DMs, you’re starting from zero trust every single time. You’re proving yourself before they’ve ever heard of you.
With an inbound system, by the time someone books a discovery call, they’ve:
That’s not a cold lead. That’s someone who’s already halfway to saying yes.
And the best part? This system works while you sleep. Your content lives on your profile forever. Your lead magnet collects emails 24/7. Your email sequence nurtures people automatically.
You build it once, optimize it over time, and never send another cold DM again.
How long does it take to start getting inbound leads?
If you’re posting consistently and promoting your lead magnet, expect your first inbound inquiries within 30-60 days. The system compounds over time. Month 6 is dramatically better than month 1.
What email platform should I use?
For most agency owners starting out, Mailchimp (free tier) or ConvertKit works perfectly. Don’t overthink the tech. Pick one and start.
How much content do I need to post?
Minimum 3-4 times per week on your primary platform. Quality matters more than quantity, but consistency is non-negotiable. The algorithm rewards people who show up regularly.
Can I still do some outreach while building my inbound system?
Yes, but shift from cold DMs to warm engagement. Comment on your ideal clients’ posts. Engage with their stories. Build genuine relationships. When you eventually reach out, they already know your name.
What if I’m not good at writing emails?
Write like you talk. Your emails should sound like a text from a friend, not a marketing campaign. If you can explain a social media tip in a voice note, you can write an email. Keep them short (200-300 words) and focused on one idea.
