Build Authority When Nobody Knows You Yet

“But nobody knows who I am yet.”

I hear this from new social media managers all the time. And I get it. When you’re just starting out, it feels impossible to position yourself as an expert when your follower count is in the hundreds and your portfolio is still being built.

But here’s what I want you to hear: authority is not about audience size. It’s about how you show up.

Build Authority When Nobody Knows You Yet

Some of the most successful agency owners in our community started with zero followers, zero portfolio pieces, and zero industry connections. What they had was a willingness to show up like they belonged in the room before anyone told them they could sit down.

What Authority Actually Means

Authority isn’t fame. It’s trust.

When a potential client lands on your profile, they’re asking one question: “Can this person get me results?”

They’re not counting your followers. They’re looking at how you communicate, how you present yourself, and whether you seem like someone who knows what they’re doing.

And that’s entirely within your control from day one.

5 Ways to Build Authority Starting Today

1. Teach What You Know (Even If It Feels Basic)

The stuff that feels obvious to you is brand new to your ideal client. You know how the Instagram algorithm works? Your dream client doesn’t. You understand the difference between reach and impressions? They think those are the same thing.

Start posting educational content. One tip per day. Break down a concept. Share a mini case study. You don’t need to be the world’s foremost expert. You just need to be one step ahead of the person you’re trying to help.

2. Borrow Authority Before You Build Your Own

This is one of the most underrated strategies I teach. When you’re new, lean on:

Data and research. “According to Sprout Social’s latest report, short-form video generates 2x more engagement than static posts.” Now you’re not just stating your opinion. You’re backing it up.

Client results. Even if you’ve had one client, share the results. “Grew this account by 400 followers in 30 days” is a powerful statement whether it’s your first client or your fiftieth.

Your own accounts. Practice what you preach. If your content strategy works on your own account, document it. That IS your portfolio.

3. Have an Opinion

Nothing kills authority faster than playing it safe. The social media managers who build loyal audiences are the ones willing to say “this doesn’t work and here’s why.”

“Posting 3 times a day doesn’t grow your account. Here’s what actually does.”

“Stop buying followers. I’ll show you what real growth looks like.”

“Your Canva templates are fine, but they’re not making you money.”

Having a strong point of view makes you memorable. And in a sea of people posting the same recycled advice, memorable is everything.

4. Show Your Process, Not Just Your Results

People trust what they can see. Take your audience behind the scenes:

Film yourself building a content calendar. Screenshot your analytics dashboard (with permission). Walk through how you research hashtags. Show your audit process when you take on a new client.

This does two things: it proves you actually know what you’re doing, and it makes potential clients think “I want someone doing this for MY business.”

5. Be Consistent Before You’re Good

Your first 50 posts will not be your best work. That’s fine. Nobody’s first 50 posts were good. But showing up consistently tells the algorithm and your audience that you’re serious.

I’d rather see someone post a slightly imperfect Reel every day for 30 days than spend a month perfecting one post. Consistency builds authority because it builds familiarity. And familiarity builds trust.

The Authority Trap to Avoid

Here’s where I see new social media managers get stuck: they think they need to be “ready” before they start showing up as an expert.

They’re waiting for the certification. The course. The magic number of clients. The rebrand.

But authority isn’t something you earn and then display. It’s something you build in real time by being visible, helpful, and consistent.

Every post you publish is a brick in your authority foundation. Start laying them now.

What This Looks Like in Practice

One of our students had 87 followers when she started posting educational Reels about social media strategy for restaurants. Within 60 days, she had signed two clients at $2,000/month. Not because she had a massive audience, but because the right two people saw her content and thought “she clearly knows what she’s talking about.”

That’s the power of Authority Activation. You don’t need everyone to see you. You need the right people to trust you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many followers do I need before I can call myself an expert?

Zero. Expertise is about knowledge and results, not follower count. Some of the best social media managers I know have under 1,000 followers because they spend their time delivering results for clients, not growing their own account.

What should I post about when I’m just starting?

Teach one thing you learned this week. Share an opinion about something trending. Break down a strategy you used on your own account or a client’s. Behind-the-scenes of your workflow. You have more content than you think.

How long does it take to build authority?

If you’re posting consistently (4-5 times per week) with a strong point of view, you’ll start getting DMs and inquiries within 30-60 days. Authority compounds over time, but the early results come faster than you’d expect.

Should I niche down to build authority faster?

Yes. Being “the social media person” is forgettable. Being “the social media strategist for wellness brands” is specific enough to build real authority. The more specific your niche, the faster you become the obvious choice.

What platforms should I focus on?

The one where your ideal clients spend time. For most social media managers, that’s Instagram. But if you serve B2B clients, LinkedIn might be better. Don’t spread yourself thin across 5 platforms. Own one first.
